The Future Men on Jennifer Brown’s Podcast “The Will To Change”

Jack Myers, author of The Future of Men: Masculinity in the Twenty-First Century and founder of MediaVillage.com discusses the “lean out” or disengagement phenomenon that is happening among young men and the cost to society. Jack shares his thoughts about how why young men are falling behind relative to women in their age group, and what we can do to uplift and support young men. He also discusses how we can shift the cultural narrative to one that is more supportive of a definition of masculinity that goes beyond traditional gender roles.   You can also listen on iTunes, Stitcher, and Google Play.  […]

What a Man, What a Man, What a Mighty Good Man | Good Men Project

By David Shaw The bearded man looks around sheepishly as he applies eye shadow in front of a make-up mirror. He dons a long haired wig and then makes his debut. He enters a room populated by young girls dressed as fairies. One girl looks up in astonishment and then smiles. The sound track is Linda Lyndell singing, “what a man, what a man, what a mighty good man.” The scene then shifts to dad with fairy princess daughter at a Chase bank branch with a voice over speaking to the importance of saving for a college education. Men dressed […]

Why Men Need to Speak Out Against Rape Culture

By now, you’ve definitely heard of the rape case that has the whole country talking. Last March, former Stanford student Brock Turner was convicted of sexual assault after being found “thrusting” on top of a half-naked, unconscious woman behind a dumpster. Last Thursday, he was sentenced to 6 months in county jail — a lenient sentence because prison would have a “severe impact” on him. Let’s get straight to the point: from the light sentence to the media coverage, the handling of this rape case is utterly inexcusable. We wonder why sexual assault survivors don’t come forward; well, this is a textbook […]

David Brooks Sees Post-Trump Problems with Men. I’m Offering Solutions.

A lot of us are asking — why has Donald Trump gotten this far in the Republican presidential campaign? Part of Trump’s unprecedented success has to do with male anger. In a recent New York Times op ed, David Brooks wrote on the need for a new national identity: We’ll probably need a new definition of masculinity, too. There are many groups in society who have lost an empire but not yet found a role. Men are the largest of those groups. The traditional masculine ideal isn’t working anymore. It leads to high dropout rates, high incarceration rates, low labor force participation […]

Is The Economy Of The Future Going To Make Men Extinct?

It’s a simple enough question, but according to businessman and writer Jack Myers, who’s preparing to release his latest book, The Future of Men, through digital publisher Inkshares, it’s a question that guys have trouble answering without resorting to a little dark humor. “I’ve been working on [the book] actively for almost three years now,” said Myers, “And as I’ve been telling friends, colleagues or just people I’m meeting that I’m working on a book about the future of men, the women are fascinated and interested — and the typical reaction I get from a man is, ‘Is there a […]

In a Woman-Run World, Marketers Will Have to Go Softer on Men | AdAge

By Rance Crain Back in 2001, I wrote a column that asked: “Why do advertisers and agencies think it’s humorous to depict husbands as childish-but-lovable goofballs, unable to perform the simplest tasks without prodding and reminders from their wives? “A corollary question: Do wives get this way only after being mothers themselves, or do they learn such behavior by observing how their own moms treat their fathers?” After reading Jack Myers’ new book, “The Future of Men,” I must conclude that the advertisers who depicted men as goofballs knew what they were doing. In explaining why he wrote his book, […]

Young Men Are Facing a Masculinity Crisis | TIME

By Jack Myers We are at a historic moment in gender relations. The women’s movement can move ahead with the active support, involvement and encouragement of men, or fall behind as men—especially young men—take up arms behind the quiet, but active, angry men’s movement. This conflict is playing out in politics right now. Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are tapping into what I’m calling a “Lean Out” generation of young, discouraged and angry men—men who are feeling abandoned by the thousands of years of history that defined what it meant to be a real man: to be strong; to be […]

Rebranding The American Man | Fast Company

BY ELIZABETH SEGRAN03.14.16 | 6:06 AM The fight for gender equality in the workplace is far from over. Women still haven’t broken the glass ceiling: This year, only 24 companies out of the Fortune 500 are led by female CEOs and only 19% of board seats in the S&P 500 were held by women. But while there is still a lot of work left to be done, it’s also important to recognize that women have made big strides over the last few decades. The women’s movement appears to be bearing fruit, particularly among millennials. “On an overall basis, (women) still […]
